- The stencil needs bare skin. The transferred outline has to sit flat and stay put for the whole session, and hair lifts it and breaks the lines.
- The artist needs to see and wipe. Ink and fluid are wiped away constantly while the tattoo goes in, and hair holds both on the surface where they hide the work.

What the studio rules say about the razor
Tattoo hygiene is regulated at state level in the US. In Texas, the minimum standards for licensed tattoo studios say that if shaving is required, razors must be single-use, and the razor or razor head must go into a biohazard container after use. The same rules require single-use stencils.

Should you shave before your tattoo appointment
Usually no, and ask your artist first. Most artists would rather do the shave themselves, right before the stencil goes on, with a fresh razor and on skin they have just cleaned.
There is a specific reason not to shave at home the night before if your skin reacts to it. The same Texas rules say tattooing must not be performed on skin showing rashes, boils, infections or abrasions. Razor burn, bumps or small nicks across the area can mean the artist has to work around them or move your appointment.
Hair while the tattoo heals

Do not shave a healing tattoo
A razor drags across the surface, and a healing tattoo has crusts and flakes that need to come off on their own. Wait until the tattoo has fully healed, which usually takes two to three weeks for the surface, and later if it is still flaking.

Do not wax a healing tattoo either
Waxing pulls at the skin as well as the hair, which is exactly what fresh crusts and new skin cannot take. Hair removal creams work chemically, and a healing tattoo is broken skin, so they wait too. Wait for full healing before any of them.
Ingrown hairs and bumps in a new tattoo
As hair regrows through a healing tattoo, some people get small bumps. Leave them alone and keep up the washing and moisturizing. Keeping hair off a healed tattoo
Once the tattoo has healed, it is ordinary skin again as far as hair removal goes, and you can shave, trim or wax it.
- Shaving is the simplest. Use a sharp razor and some lather, and moisturize after.
- Trimming keeps hair short enough to show the design without touching the skin.
- Waxing is fine on healed skin if it suits you.
- Laser hair removal is a light-based medical treatment, so tell the provider about any tattoo in the treatment area before they start and follow their advice on it.
Does hair make a tattoo look worse
It can hide it, which is not the same as damaging it. Fine lines, small lettering and light shading disappear under thick hair first, while bold outlines and solid black hold up better.
